La rando des cascades

S'il y a une chose que j'aurais retenue apres 3 ans passes a Hong-Kong, c'est qu'il ne faut surtout pas se fier aux predictions meteo quand on cherche a planifier un week-end. Le fameux site HK observatory n'est finalement utile que lorsqu'il s'agit de suivre l'evolution des typhons a la trace, et encore, il nous cree souvent de fausses joies.

Ainsi, alors qu'il etait prevu une journee nuageuse et probablement pluvieuse, c'est un soleil resplendissant qui m'a reveillee dimanche matin, et la premiere chose que j'ai apercue fut un grand ciel bleu, totalement depourvu de nuage.

Ragaillardie par la perspective d'une nouvelle journee caniculaire comme Hong-Kong sait si bien nous en reserver, et paree de ma creme solaire indice 50, j'etais pleine d'entrain pour l'activite du jour : une petite randonnee sympathique sur l'ile de Lantau.

Sympathique : car pas difficile. Et surtout, une rando avec une carotte a la cle: de belles cascades rafraichissantes. Rien de telle qu'une petite promenade de sante sous le cagnard pour apprecier pleinement pareille destination!

Point de depart: Tai O.

Apres avoir essaye toutes les voies sans issues du village, nous avons finalement suivi les panneaux qi indiquaient simplement je chemin a suivre. On suit donc la mer, sur un passage goudronne completement expose au soleil.

Puis il est temps de bifurquer dans les bois, ce qui a l'avantage certain de nous mettre un peu a l'abri, de profiter d'une vue imprenable

et de découvrir la faune locale (des araignees toutes plus grosses les unes que les autres)

Le chemin est clairement une route peu usitee. Et on doute parfois du chemin a suivre, d'habitude si clairement balise a Hong-Kong. Ca change! D'autre part, les derniers typhons ont fait pas mal de degats et bloques certains passages. mais nous n'allons nous laisser rebuter par quelques branchages inopportuns!

Et puis finalement, on entend enfin le son cristallin de la cascade. Oh joie!

Je me crois arrivee au but. Non, bien sur, ca serait trop facile! Il reste encore une montee, perilleuse, a flanc de montagne. J'ai cru y rester a quelques reprises. Au péril de ma vie, mais pour la gloire du photo reportage, j'ai pu prendre la vue suivante:

Mais une fois le but atteint, c'est un vrai plaisir.

Le retour se fait sur les fesses pour la partie pentue. Et puis finalement, le reste de la balade parait long : il fait chaud, on a soif. On saute dans le bus n11 qui nous laisse a la plage de Cheung Sha. un pti plongeon dans la mer, avant de se poser au resto sud-africain, qui ne prend pas une ride et fait toujours autant plaisir!

Jogging or swimming? on Typhoon3 alert....

Hier, j’hésitais entre aller faire un tour a la piscine et faire quelques longueurs histoire de me défouler, ou bien courir (ça faisait longtemps). J'ai opté pour le jogging... Sous la pluie battante du typhon 3 !

Finalement, c’était un peu comme nager toute habillée!

Qu’espère-t-on lors d'un typhon 3... qu'il passe a l'alerte 8, effectivement. Ce fut le cas hier soir avant minuit! Belle perspective pour une petite grasse matinée le vendredi matin. Sauf que l'alerte est repassée a 3 a 6h du matin (oui, j’étais réveillée. Pour la grasse mat' on repassera!)

Knit knit knit a Mongkok

Ça n'aura échappé a personne, cela fait quelques temps que les travaux manuels (je ne sais pas comment designer de manière générique toutes ces activités du genre couture, scrapbooking, cuisine et j'en passe) font un retour en force. On n'est plus une vieille mamie qui tricote un pull pour son petit-fils, on est une jeune femme qui se tricote une écharpe dans le métro (pratique, ça passe le temps aussi). On n'est plus une femme qui fait a manger pour sa famille, on est une femme (active) qui cuisine pour le plaisir (et qui partage ses recette révolutionnaires sur son blog) (avec de belles photos si possible) (faut vraiment que je mette en ligne le mien...). On fait ses jupes soi-même. Etc.

Ainsi, le tricot (un peu détourné je vous l'accorde) est a l'honneur dans le centre commercial Langham Place, avec une expo intitulée I love knit.

Plutôt sympathique!

3 year anniversary

Voila, cela fait 3 ans que je suis a Hong-Kong, presque jour pour jour. Je peine a y croire. Une telle duree est un sacre record!
Le 30 juillet 2009, j'atterissais a Hong-Kong, en retard, et la mort dans l'ame. Je faisais la betise de prendre un bus qui m'amenerait devant mon hotel (pourri) apres mains detour (l'hotel etait le dernier de la trajectoire..) au lieu de prendre l'agreable airport express, qui devrait servir d'exemple a toutes les autres villes du monde. Il faisait ce jour-la (enfin, cet ete-la) une chaleur particulierement etouffante, humide, moite. Bref desagreable.
Certaines choses changent: je me suis mise a aimer Hong-Kong.

Eh oui, la chaleur d'hier etait forte, mais sacrement desagreable (c'en etait presque a se feliciter d'etre enfermee au bureau, plutot que d'etre a la piscine)(heu.... non quand meme pas)

C'est vrai que la magnifique partielle vue depuis mon 13eme etage hier est devenue sacrement embrumee hier. J'ai betement pense qu'il allait pleuvoir...

Les previsions pour auj n'augurent pas beaucoup plus agreable cela dit... 29-33degres... et je parle pas du ressenti...

HONG KONG (Reuters) - The worst pollution in two years smothered Hong Kong for a second day on Thursday, prompting warnings to the old and sick to stay indoors and obscuring one of the world's most famous views.

Pollution readings were "very high" in business and shopping districts such as Central, Western, Causeway Bay and Mongkok, air monitoring stations showed, surpassed only once in March 2010 when a sandstorm in northern China covered Hong Kong in dust.
"Bad air is trapped here. But even though external circumstances can't blow away the pollutants, the problem still lies fundamentally in vehicular emissions in Hong Kong itself," said Patrick Fung of Clean Air Network, a local pro-environment group.
The view of the cramped skyscrapers of Hong Kong Island and the Peak was obscured from across the harbour in Kowloon.
Air pollution in Hong Kong, a former British colony which returned to Chinese rule in 1997, is a major source of worry for local citizens and foreign businesses, which increasingly see it as compromising the quality of life.
In a recent survey by human resources consultancy ECA International, Hong Kong distinguished itself as a place where its air quality was among the worst in the world.
The pollution comes largely from coal-fired power stations and traffic, though a significant contribution wafts down from the tens of thousands of factories in China's neighbouring manufacturing heartland of the Pearl River Delta.
Under intense lobbying, the government has been gradually tightening its air-quality objectives and monitoring measures to meet World Health Organisation standards, but these remain far short of global guidelines, green groups say.

Eh oui, cette nuit, nous depassons donc le fameux typhon 8.
D'ailleurs, on entend le vent rugir comme jamais. Et je pense que le bric-a-brac de la terrasse des voisins doit valdinguer dans tous les sens, a en juger par les bruits mysterieux que j'entends... Nous verrons demain matin l'etendue des degats...

Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9

Tropical Cyclone Bulletin

Here is the latest Tropical Cyclone Bulletin issued by the
Hong Kong Observatory.

The Increasing Gale or Storm Signal, No. 9, is in force.

This means that winds are expected to increase significantly
as Vicente moves closer to Hong Kong.

Typhoon Vicente has intensified into a severe typhoon.

At 11 p.m., Vicente was centred about 130 kilometres
south-southwest of Hong Kong (near 21.2 degrees north 113.9
degrees east) and is forecast to move northwest or
west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour in the
general direction of the region to the west of the Pearl
River Estuary.

In the past few hours, Vicente intensified rapidly into a
severe typhoon and moved in a more northerly direction,
edging closer to Hong Kong.  Parts of the territory is
already affected by storm force winds.  According to the
latest forecast track, Vicente is expected to skirt within
100 kilometres to the southwest of Hong Kong, towards the
region to the west of the Pearl River Estuary.  As the
direction of local winds will turn to east to southeast,
places previously sheltered from the winds will become
exposed.  Members of the public should be on the alert. Do
not go outside.

In the past hour, the maximum sustained winds recorded at
Ngong Ping, Tate's Cairn and Waglan Island were 147, 116 and
112 kilometres per hour respectively.

A high water level of about 3.0 metres above chart datum is
expected at Quarry Bay between midnight and 3 a.m. The high
water level may cause flooding in low-lying areas.

(Precautionary Announcements)

1. Do not go outside. If you are reasonably protected, stay
where you are and keep well away from all windows. Close all
interior doors and make sure children are confined to the
least exposed part of your home. On no account should you
touch electric cables that have been blown loose.

2. Stay away from exposed windows and doors because glass,
already under strain from wind pressure, will shatter if a
flying object should hit it. Make sure you have a safe place
to shelter, should windows be broken. You should only fix
broken windows and doors when there is no danger in doing
so.

3. Since seas are very high to phenomenal and the current is
strong with changing direction, you are advised to stay away
from the shoreline and not to engage in water sports.

4. Flights at Hong Kong International Airport may be
affected by the weather. Please contact your airline for the
latest flight information before departing for the airport.

Savez-vous planter des choux?

a la mode, a la moooode....

If there’s only one thing to say : we were extremely lucky with the weather last week-end, especially on Sunday. Given the apocalyptic weather of the past few days (storms, black rain, and so on) we were inclined to write off the tree planting activity in Lantau and hope for a better way to spend our week-end. But there was no need to worry. On International Earth Day, Mother Earth favored us with a more than wonderful weather (way too hot some might even say). It really felt like summer, and we were in excellent spirit to join our long planned first CSR interbank activity, leaded by the green association Ark Eden.

I'm happy to report that we got a pretty good participation rate and commitment: out of 13 registered volunteers, 11 actually showed up!

Along with 4 other financial institutions, we made our way to Mui Wo (Lantau island) before climbing the hill slopes behind the village area.

Just off the pier, Jenny from Ark Eden association, briefed us a bit on the organization of the day, and the purpose of the association.

Concerned about the fires destroying regularly the forests and more globally the ecosystem in Hong-Kong, she has been dedicating herself to protecting the environment by replanting various species of local trees, via this association, and helped with volunteers, building up her knowledge of the ecosystem of Hong-Kong. Rising awareness of the danger of an unsuited reforestation with Australian trees, she pointed out the “plastic forest” in the distance. We listened carefully, took the group picture…

…then headed to Ark Eden “center” where all the plants were ready to be taken to the top of the hills. About 80 of us were gathered there, piling up small trees in plastic (!) bags, and bottles of water. 

After a brief description of the planting sites, we divided ourselves into 4 different groups, and somehow, the valiant SG group ended up planting trees on site A, the hardest of all. Luckily, the path was shaded, even though a bit slippery. 

But at last we got there. Wonderful views. A lot of (warm) air, not the kind we get back in the city. This one is pleasant. There’s even a slight breeze. 

Then we followed attentively how to plant the trees properly.

Where sould I start digging ? What do you mean “not yet”? For site A, there’s still some climbing needed. Really??!!

That’s when you learn the meaning of the word “slippery”. It was practically impossible to haul oneself up onto the top of the hill. Needless to say, with our hands full of trees and bottles. But I’m glad and proud to say : we made it !

Then we started planting, like madmen, under the hottest sun. But glad to take part to this meaningful activity, and happy to show our care for Hong-Kong, and for our planet.

Dans la série: je m’intègre au sein de mon entreprise et de la communauté de Hong-Kong, je présente : Livia l’ambassadrice CSR (corporate social responsibility). Eh non, ce n’est pas une blague. Pour ceux qui me connaissent, je vous rassure. Non je n’ai pas été prise d’une fièvre exotique qui rend fou et pousse les gens à entreprendre des activités inconsidérées. Mais en cherchant à m’ouvrir petit à petit, j’ai eu d’envie d’en faire un peu plus. Et puis après tout, je ne serai pas à Hong-Kong indéfiniment, alors si je ne fais pas quelque-chose maintenant, quand le ferai-je ?

Tout ca pour dire qu’avec d’autres collègues nous avons pris la relève de ce comité qui gère des événements de charité, au bénéfice d’associations locales et internationales. Nous avons collecté des fonds auprès du staff en début d’année pour HAC qui est notre principal partenaire. Et de nombreux projets sont en cours pour l’année 2012. J’aurai l’occasion d’en reparler.

J’étais donc samedi dernier en « représentation officielle » (mais oui, voyez-vous ca) lors d’une cérémonie de clôture organisée par HAC. Il s’agissait d’une remise de prix et d’une exposition clôturant un projet sponsorisé par mon très cher employeur tout au long de l’année 2011 : le Fairy Green Home project.

Comme l’exposition n’a duré que du 31 mars au 2 avril, je n’ai malheureusement pas eu le temps de blogger à ce sujet plus tôt.

L’association HAC cherche à contribuer à l’éducation, l’intégration, la solidarité et au développement d’enfants provenant de milieux défavorisés. Ils se basent sur l’importance des relations parents-enfants, la lecture, la découverte de l’environnement et la conscience écologique. Enfin, ce projet à portée éducative a entrainé les enfants et les volontaires dans différents coins de Hong-Kong, notamment les iles Lamma et Lantau (des endroits que ces enfants n’auraient probablement pas l’opportunité de visiter par eux-mêmes). Bon en gros, on leur a dit, faites attention à votre environnement, ne laissez pas trainer des ordures par terre, etc. et essayons de penser à une manière de vivre dans un meilleur environnement. C’est ainsi qu’ils ont été incité à créer leur maison « écologique » idéale à partir de matériaux de récupération. Et on peut dire qu’ils ont été sacrément ingénieux !

Outre les maisons que je vais décrire plus tard, l’exposition se voulait interactive. Il y avait ainsi un endroit pour écouter des bruits de la nature, un coin pour sentir des odeurs naturelles, une mini éolienne qui fabriquait de l’électricité quand on activait ses pales, et des pierres qu’il fallait réussir à mettre en équilibre !

J’ai pris en photo chacune des dix maisons qui étaient présentées pour le concours, et un village. Il s’agissait de noter les maisons selon différents critères : leur aspect écologique, la créativité, la beauté et la qualité du travail. C’était pas facile. J’avoue que je n’ai pas compris grand-chose à la remise des prix, puisque tout était en cantonnais, mais il semble bien qu’aucun gamin n’est reparti les mains vides !

Durant la cérémonie, Jim (collègue du CSR) et moi-même siégions au rang d’honneur ! avec la responsable de l’association, et des membres de la communauté de Hong-Kong (social welfare department) et d’autres personnes dont je n’ai bien sur pas compris les fonctions. J’ai eu le droit a une traduction (partielle) des discours. Et puis chaque enfant est venu présenter son projet, en décrivant les matériaux utilise et la logique écologique qui les avait amenés à leur production finale. Seul l’un des projets était réalisé par des non cantonnais. Il s’agissait de 2 sœurs Philippines, une troisième jeune fille se chargeant de traduite de l’anglais au cantonnais leurs explications. C’était tout à fait international !

A la fin de la cérémonie, c’était séance photo a gogo ! tous les gamins voulaient être pris en photos avec nous. Et puis il y a eu les nombreuses photos de groupe aussi. C’était plutôt marrant !

From March 31st to April 2nd, HAC, the main local charity that we support, was holding the “Fairy Green Home” exhibition, in the Central Market area. This exhibition was the final touch of the year-long “Fairy Green Project” that led children from the association and SG staff to Lamma island and Tai O fishing village in a number of green projects throughout 2011. Children got the opportunity to discover remote areas of Hong-Kong they would probably not get the chance to know without the help of the association. But the main goal here was to draw their attention to ecological matters, and the importance of preserving our environment. With this in mind, HAC children were encouraged to create their ideal green home model, made from recycled materials.

This exhibition was a unique chance to admire their work, and award the children well-deserved prizes.

Jim and I came as the Official Ambassadors from SG during the official closing ceremony, that took place on Saturday March 31st from 1:30pm. We were introduced to the work of the children, I’m sharing now with you:

All I can say is that I was truly amazed with the work they did. It was so creative, beautiful, colorful and I can add high work quality. A small notice above each artwork would also explain the ecological logic behind the model home architecture and conception.

The ceremony itself was perfectly organized, featuring a video reminding the good times during Lamma and Tai O trips, then a few speeches were given, from HAC, and some members of the Hong-Kong social welfare department. Finally, each child (I should say artist) came up on stage and presented their work, with much detail. Although I could not understand much of what was said (since my Cantonese knowledge is inexistent), I was impressed by such young kids able to express themselves in front of a crowd. (Luckily, May Wong, executive director from HAC was translating the main ideas to me in English)

Finally, Jim and I were honored to present the awards to the children, in each category mentioned above. And at last, take about a million pictures with everybody.
